Pedestrian Safety

The most important rule, if you are walking to and from school, is to behave responsibly, exercise care and not endanger or inconvenience other users of the road.  It is important to remember that you are sharing the sidewalk with others walking and need to be courteous when approaching those walking.  Some important tips are:

Always cross the street with an adult, never alone if you’re younger than 10 years old.

Always stop at the curb before crossing the street.

Always walk; never run, across the street.

Always cross at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.

Always look left, right and left again before crossing.

Always walk facing oncoming traffic.

Always make sure drivers see you before crossing in front of them.

Always play in safe places, never play in driveways, streets, parking lots or unfenced yards by the street.

Always wear white or light clothing or reflectors when walking at night.

Always cross at least 10 feet in front of a school bus.
